Broken Heart, Broken Land

While everyone’s eyes are on (Michael) Kiwanuka, Afro-soul singer Imany is quietly conquering territory and capturing hearts. Born in the French Comoros Islands, her stage name means “faith” in Swahili. Her deep vocal sound reminds a little of e.g. Tracy Chapman. The Shape Of A Broken Heart, the singer’s excellent debut was released last year, doing very well in France. The record tells an emotional, heartfelt tale, without turning into melancholia. You Will Never Know even made it to the top of the Greek charts. The video has over 3 million hits on YouTube.
