Your Summer Playlist

If your musical thirst is drenched by the likes of Bright Light Bright Light, TYP and Empire of the Sun, than here’s two more albums to add to your playlist this Summer.
Ryan Merchant and Sebu Simonian of Capital Cities delivered a superb full length earlier this month. In a Tidal Wave of Mystery is a line you will have heard in the duo’s debut single Safe and Sound, a song they first released some two years ago. If you loved the horns and the feel-good vibe of the track, you’re in for a treat. The whole album follows the same recipe, without sounding the same. The only break from this routine comes with Farrah Fawcett Hair, a radio commercial- like track featuring André 3000 and Shemika Secrest, narrated by NPR’s Frank Tavares. The new single Kangaroo Court will surely get you on board, if you’re not already.

In the same line, ever so superb but maybe a bit more divers, is SlowKnights’ album Cosmos, released back in March. SlowKnights is Scissor Sisters’ Derek “Del Marquis” Gruen’s latest collaboration, after working with musicians such as Xaxier, and members of Prince’s New Power Generation and his own Scissor Sisters.
Gruen only lays down lead vocals on Legendary Children. Other vocalists include Xavier, former Scissor Sister members Chrissi Poland and Bridget Barkan, and Rod Thomas (a.k.a. Bright Light x2), who is back on board after collaborating with Del Marquis on his own debut Make Me Believe In Hope. Cosmos perfectly blends funk & pop, with a seamless track listing and seductive sounds.

More Great Gatsby

The Soundtrack to the upcoming Baz Lurhmann movie The Great Gatsby promises to be outstanding. Jay Z overlooking the whole project seems to deliver, despite the fact that Mrs Carter and André 3000 are recording Back To Black doesn’t please a bunch of Winehouse fans. An official soundtrack sampler has been released, revealing 30-second snippets of each of the songs, the Beyoncé cover excluded. After the jump however, you’ll find another audio sampler, which allows you to listen to a sneak peak. Another remarkable remake is Beyoncé’s Crazy In Love, in a swing version performed by Emeli Sandé, who also contributed a track to Danny Boyle’s latest Trance.
And for those who simply can’t get enough of Lana Del Rey‘s vintage escapades, you will be thrilled to hear Young and Beautiful. The track will become the first official single to be taken from the Soundtrack. If this track is anything to go by, both the film and its musical setting got us eagerly looking forward to seeing the result. You can listen to the superb song in full after the jump, as well as Florence + the Machine’s contribution Over The Love.

The Great Gatsby OST

Another Soundtrack causing quite a stir on social media is the upcoming Baz Lurhmann movie The Great Gatsby, based on the novel by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald, set in the Roaring Twenties. The film starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire will be released May 10th. Executive producer of its Soundtrack is Jay-Z, who also contributed an original song. Other names listed on the score include Q-Tip, Lana Del Rey, the xx, Florence & The Machine, Will.i.am, Fergie, Emile Sandé, Jack White, Gotye, and Bryan Ferry. Most notable is a new collaboration between Beyoncé and Andre 3000. They are rumored to cover the Amy Winehouse classic Back To Black. Mitch Winehouse, Amy’s dad, tweeted many aren’t too impressed the Diva and one half of Outkast are touching this iconic song. No snippets surfaced thus far. Meanwhile, Beyoncé did debut her new Pepsi commercial, entitled Mirrors. The advert features the Timbaland-produced Grown Woman, new music from her upcoming album.
